NKHR Meets Amnesty International: A Shared Commitment to Human Rights

Last week, NKHR had a meeting with Agnès Callamard, Secretary General of Amnesty International, during her visit to South Korea, marking the first visit by an Amnesty International leader to the country in 17 years.

The meeting also included Cho Hee-kyung, Secretary General of International Korea, as well as representatives from other human rights organizations.

Addressing North Korean human rights:

The discussion explored the current challenges facing human rights in North Korea, including how the evolving geopolitical landscape and growing cooperation between North Korea, China, and Russia complicate efforts to advance accountability.

Exposing forced labor and exploitation:

NKHR shared its recent investigative reports, ‘Sailing Sanctions’, ‘Financing Oppression and Weapons Program’, and ‘Made in China'. When introducing the findings, the discussions focused on how a system of forced labor, especially in North Korea’s political prison camps, generates resources that help sustain the regime.

A Meaningful History:

For NKHR, this meeting holds special significance. Our founder, Hyun Yoon, first established the Korean section of Amnesty International, dedicating himself to defending human rights and democracy in South Korea. He later founded NKHR, extending this commitment to the human rights situation in North Korea.

Inspired by the belief that “it is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness,” a motto closely associated with Amnesty International, NKHR continues to carry this spirit forward, working to bring North Korean human rights to the forefront of international attention.
