Shining a Light on North Korea’s Political Prison Camps Through Art
Whispers from North Korea: Bringing Survivor Stories to Life Through Art and Virtual Reality
From August 28 to 30, NKHR hosted “Whispers from North Korea”, a the three-day exhibition brining together survivor stories, art, and immersive VR to help visitors understand the harsh realities of North Korea’s political prison camps.
➡️ Survivor stories through art:
The drawings of Kim Hye-Sook, survivor of Political Prison Camp No. 18, were at the heart of the exhibition. Through her art, she documents the experiences she survived and witnessed inside the camp.
➡️ Survivor stories through writing:
Kang Cheol-Hwan, survivor of Political Prison Camp No. 15, wrote 'The Aquariums of Pyongyang' about his life in the camp. His story became the main inspiration for NKHR’s new VR experience.
➡️ Survivor stories through VR:
At the exhibition, NKHR launched our new VR experience 'Remember the Voiceless', giving participants a glimpse of the harsh realities of daily life inside the camps through an immersive experience.
Across three days, the exhibition welcomed visitors, walk-ins, foreign tourists, and representatives from multiple media outlets.
