Discussion with National Human Rights Commission of Republic of Korea

2025 January 1

On January 1, National Human Rights Commission of Republic of Korea (ROK, South Korea) hosted a meeting with NGOs working on the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (ICPPED) to gather inputs for the Commission’s feedback on South Korea's first national report following its accession to the convention in 2023. During the discussion, Ji-Yoon Lee, Senior Program Manager at NKHR, provided opinions on the draft report. Emphasizing the lack of information regarding delays in enacting domestic legislation to implement the ICPPED, she highlighted the absence of statistical data on enforced disappearances committed by the North Korean government. Lee urged the Commission’s feedback to request that the Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Foreign Affairs ensure a comprehensive and accurate report.
