Domestic and International Human Rights Awards

In recognition of its tireless efforts to raise awareness of the human rights situation in North Korea, and to promote solidarity between victims and citizens, NKHR has received the following honors:

  • 2003: Democracy Award, presented by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), USA

  • 2010: Yoon Hyun (Chairperson) awarded the Order of Civil Merit, Moran Medal by the Government of the Republic of Korea

  • 2011: John Diefenbaker Defender of Human Rights and Freedom Award, presented by the Government of Canada

  • 2016: DMZ Peace Prize (Exchange and Cooperation Award), presented by Gangwon Province and the Gangwon Ilbo

  • 2018: Democracy Award, presented by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), USA

  • 2023: Kim Young-ja (Secretary-General) awarded the Order of Civil Merit, Moran Medal by the Government of the Republic of Korea

  • 2024: Joanna Hosaniak (Deputy Director General) awarded the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Rebirth of Poland by the Government of Poland

  • 2025: Unification and Sharing Award, presented by the Unification and Sharing Foundation
