NKHR's Research Referenced in The New York Times

1 min read

Our latest investigative reports, "Sailing Sanctions" and "Financing Oppression and Weapons Program," were recently referenced in The New York Times article, “The Hidden Human Cost of Kim Jong-un’s New Power,” published on September 17, 2026.

The article examines how North Korea’s economic and diplomatic status relies on the exploitation of its people, including coal miners and workers sent abroad.

It references NKHR’s research on:

🔎 Maritime trade and coal exports, including a fivefold increase in large cargo ship visits to Nampo since 2019 and blacklisted vessels docking openly at Chinese terminals.

🔎 North Korean workers in Russia, including how educational institutions disguised workers’ labor as internships and their wages as scholarships.
