Online Workshop: Crimes Against Humanity in North Korea and the Global Supply Chain

On April 16, Joanna Hosaniak, Deputy Director in General, was invited as the main speaker to the online workshop organized by the LiNK UC Berkeley branch and talked about how the global supply chain of wig and eyelashes are linked to the crimes of humanity happening to North Korean women in detention facilities.

Discussion with the European Criminal Law Experts

On April 11, the UN Human Rights Office in Seoul convened a visiting delegation of European criminal law experts and practitioners, together with its civil society partners working on North Korean criminal accountability, to explore avenues for justice and accountability. During the meeting, NKHR presented its investigation findings on Chongori Kyowaso No. 12 and sought expert guidance on potential legal strategies.

Made in China Report: Briefing Series for Foreign Governments

On January 24, Deputy Director General Joanna Hosaniak briefed the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons at the United States’ Embassy in Seoul, focusing on system that could be classified as slave trade or state-sponsored human trafficking with a purpose to enslave the individuals, currently taking place between the DPRK and China.

Engagement with UK All-Parliamentary Group on North Korea, Timothy Cho

On January 23, Deputy Director General Joanna Hosaniak had an online meeting with Timothy Cho, Secretariat of the UK All-Party Parliamentary Group on North Korea (North Korea APPG) regarding NKHR’s newly published report.

Engagement with Media to Feature Made in China Report

On January 7, 2025, Deputy Director General Joanna Hosaniak participated as an expert panelist in the filming of Now On My Way to Meet You (이제 만나러 갑니다), a long-running television program on Channel A that features personal testimonies of North Korean escapees.

Discussion with National Human Rights Commission of Republic of Korea

On January 1, National Human Rights Commission of Republic of Korea (ROK, South Korea) hosted a meeting with NGOs working on the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (ICPPED) to gather inputs for the Commission’s feedback on South Korea's first national report following its accession to the convention in 2023.
